FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Wednesday, July 25, 2018
WASHINGTON – Make Room’s president and CEO Ali Solis is extremely pleased to see bipartisan success on Capitol Hill with the newly introduced Task Force on the Impact of the Affordable Housing Crisis Act. The task force aims to better understand and respond to America’s affordable housing crisis by creating a bipartisan affordable housing task force, which includes U.S. Senators Todd Young (R-Ind.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Angus Kin (I-Maine), along with Senators Dean Heller (R-Nev.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Doug Jones (D-Ala.), Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.).
“It is only through bipartisan support that the affordable housing crisis will get the attention it needs to create real, long-term solutions,” Solis said. “Make Room works to elevate affordable housing on the national agenda and create policy changes with bipartisan support every day. Task forces like these are the key to ensuring that every American has a safe and secure home; one that they can afford without the overarching concern that they are living one paycheck away from losing their homes, which currently accounts for 11 million households.”
According to a statement released by the task force, the affordable housing task force will evaluate and quantify the impact of housing costs on other government programs and provide recommendations to Congress on how to increase affordable housing options in order to improve the effectiveness of other federal programs.
The task force would:
- Evaluate and quantify the impact that a lack of affordable housing has on other areas of life and life outcomes for individuals living in the United States, including education, employment, income level, health, nutrition, access to transportation and poverty level in the neighborhood in which individuals live.
- Evaluate and quantify the costs incurred by other federal, state and local programs due to a lack of affordable housing.
- Make recommendations to Congress on how to use affordable housing to improve the effectiveness of other Federal programs and improve life outcomes for individuals living in the United States.
