Marlene and her girls

Holding a family together in Nashville

After her 10-year-old son died of a brain tumor last year, Marlene Sigar has done her best to keep life as normal as possible for her two daughters, ages 12 and 7.

But doing so is difficult – especially because Marlene devotes about 75 percent of her income to rent.

Marlene works as an adjunct professor at a local community college teaching economics but all told makes less than minimum wage.

She tries not to let her daughters, Rachel and Deborah, know how much she struggles, but she worries that they will have to move to an unsafe area.

The country rock band John and Jacob brought some much-needed fun to the family with a terrific Concert for the 1st.
