Make Room Commends California Governor Jerry Brown and State Legislature for Enactment of Landmark Affordable Housing Legislation

Washington, DC, Sept. 30, 2017 – Make Room, Inc., the nation’s leading organization working to address the rental affordability crisis in America, applauds California Governor Jerry Brown and the California state legislature for yesterday’s signing of a sweeping package of measures to promote affordable housing in the state. The package includes 15 separate bills that would create funding streams for the construction of new below-market-rate homes, streamline the regulatory process to speed up the approval and construction process for affordable housing, promote inclusionary zoning and discourage NIMBYism, and support the development of affordable homes near transit centers.

“Yesterday’s bill signing is welcome news to the 1.7 million households in California who spend more than half their income just on rent. With so many families struggling to keep a roof over their heads, yesterday’s action is an important step forward in responding to their concerns,” said Ali Solis, Make Room’s President and CEO. ”The rental affordability crisis is a national problem, affecting families and communities in every corner of the country. It’s my hope that the measures enacted in California will spur other states to respond comprehensively to their own unique affordable-housing challenges,” she added.
